Glycolysis Flashcards
Glycolysis is one of the principal pathways generating what? and where is it present?
Glycolysis is one of the principal pathways generating ATP in cells and is present in all cell types in the human body
What is the central role of glycolysis?
It is related to the availability of glucose as a fuel in blood and its ability to generate ATP in the presence and absence of oxygen
What can glycolysis lead to/ generate? and what does that lead to?
Lead to the generation of pyruvate which is subsequently oxidized in the Krebbs-cycle or to the generation of lactate which is released from the cell
What are the principal energies which containing products of glycolysis?
ATP and NADH
When can NADH be used to generate energy
ONLY in the presence of oxygen
When is NADH produced?
Only produced under aerobic conditions, but not in the absence of oxygen, where it is used to generate lactate
Glycolysis is not the only pathway in the body to use glucose what are others
Glucose can be oxidised in the pentose-phosphate pathway, which is important for the generation of NADPH or it can stored by forming glycogen
After a meal what is the main fuel for many cells in the body?
Glucose
