Glycolysis Flashcards
Where does glycolysis occur?
cytoplasm
what is the first bit of glycolysis?
An input of energy is needed to get the reactions started. 2 ATP are hydrolysed and the 2 phosphate groups are released. This increases glucoses reactivity. The glucose is. then split into 2 3C molecules.
What happens after glucose is split into the 3C molecules?
The 3C molecules are oxidised which leads to the formation of pyruvate. 2 coenzyme NAD molecules accept the hydrogen. The NAD is now reduced.
When does substrate level phosphorylation occur?
Glucose has a higher energy level than pyruvate. This extra energy is used to phosphorylate 4 ADP molecules to produce ATP.
Summarise glycolysis
Glycolysis produces 2 molecules of pyruvate, 2 reduces NAD and a net gain of 2 ATP per glucose.
