Gluteal Region & Posterior Thigh Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus Origin
Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
Gluteus Maximus Insertion
Most fibers end in iliotibial tract that inserts into lateral condyle of tibia; some insert on gluteal tuberosity
Gluteus Maximus Action
Extends thigh and assists in its lateral rotation; steadies thigh and assists in rising from sitting
Gluteus Maximus Innervation
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Gluteus Medius Origin
External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Gluteus Medius Insertion
Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
Gluteus Medius Action
Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is WB and advance opposite side during swing phase
Gluteus Medius Innervation
Superior Gluteal Nerve (L5, S1)
Piriformis Origin
Anterior surface of sacrum; sacrotuberous ligament
Piriformis Insertion
Superior border of greater trochanter of femur
Piriformis Action
Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Piriformis Innervation
Branches of anterior rami of S1 and S2
Superior Gemellus Origin
Ischial Spine
Superior Gemellus Insertion
Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Superior Gemellus Action
Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Superior Gemellus Innervation
Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Inferior Gemellus Origin
Ischial tuberosity
Inferior Gemellus Insertion
Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Inferior Gemellus Action
Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Inferior Gemellus Innervation
Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Obturator Internus Origin
Pelvic surface of ilium and ischium and obturator membrane
