Gluteal Region Muscles Flashcards
Origin of gluteus Maximus
1/ outer gluteal surface of the ilium, behind the posterior gluteal line
2/ the posterior surface of sacrum and coccyx
3/ back of sacro-tuberous ligament
Insertion of gluteus Maximus
Superficial 3/4: inserted into the posterior border of the upper part of the ilio-tibial tract
Deep 1/4: inserted into the floor of the gluteal tuberosity
Nerve supply of gluteus Maximus
Inferior gluteal nerve
Action of gluteus Maximus
1/ the main extensor of the hip joint as during rising from sitting position
2/ lateral rotator and abductor of hip join
3/ tightens ilio-tibial tract to assist in keeping knee extended in standing
Origin of tensor fascia lata
From outer lip of the iliac crest between the anterior superior iliac spine and iliac tubercle
Insertion of tensor fascia lata
Into the anterior border of ilio tibial tract
Nerve supply of tensor fascia lata
Superior gluteal nerve
Action of tensor fascia lata
It tightens ilio-tibial tract to assist in keeping the knee extended in standing and walking
Origin of gluteus medius
From outer surface of ilium ( between iliac crest (above) posterior gluteal line (behind) and anterior gluteal line (below))
Insertion of gluteus medius
Oblique ridge on the lateral surface of greater trochanter
Nerve supply of gluteus medium
Superior gluteal nerve
Origin of Gluteus minimus
Outer surface of ilium between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion of gluteus minimus
Anterior surface of greater trochanter
Nerve supply of gluteus minimus
Superior gluteal nerve
Action of gluteus medius and minimus
1/ abduction of hip joint
2/ medial rotation of thigh
3/ both muscles prevent sagging of the pelvis when the opposite leg is off the ground
