  • Behind pos. iliac line
  • Sacrum
  • Sacrotuberous lig.

Insertion:

  • Deep part- Gluteal tuberosity
  • Superficial part (larger)- Iliotibial tract (to lat. tibia)

Action:

  • Extends hip/knee
  • Strenuous extension e.g. climbing stairs “anti-gravity muscle”
