Superficial Muscles
Gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata
Gluteus Maximus
Pa- IIium, posterior surface of the sacrum and coccyx.
Da- iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur.
N/s- inferior gluteal n.
A- Extension of hip and external rotation of hip.
Gluteus Medius
Pa- ilium, between anterior and posterior gluteal lines.
Da- Lateral surface of the greater trochanter of femur.
N/s- Superior gluteal n.
A- Abduction and internal rotation of hip.
Also stabilises hip when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing.
Gluteus Minimus
Pa- ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines.
Da- Anterior surface of the greater trochanter of femur
N/s- Superior gluteal n.
A- Abduction and internal rotation of hip.
Also stanilises pelvis when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing.
Tensor Fascia Lata
Pa- Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
Da- Iliotibial tract which attaches to the anterolateral tubercle of tibia.
N/s- Superior gluteal n.
A- Abduction and internal rotation of hip.
Deep Gluteal Muscles
Piriformis, obturator internus, superior and inferior gemellus, and quadratus femoris
Piriformis
Pa- Anterior surface of sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament
Da- Superior border of the greater trochanter of femur
N/s- N. to piriformis
A- External rotation of extended hip and abduct a flexed hip and stability of hip
Obturator Internis
Pa- Internal surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bone
Da- Trochanteric fossa of femur
N/s- N. to obturator internis
A- External roation of extended hip, abduction of flexed hip. Stabilises hip
Superior and Inferior Gemellus
Pa- Superior : Ischial spine
Inferior : Ishcial tuberosity
Da- Trochanteric fossa of femur
N/s- Superior: N. to obturator internis
Inferior: N. to quadratus femoris
A- External rotation of extended hip, abduction of flexed hip and stability of hip.
Quadratus Femoris
Pa- Ischial tuberosity.
Da- Quadrate tubercle of the femur
N/s- N. to quadratus femoris
A- External rotation of hip and stabilises hip.

Iliopsoas - Psoas Major
Pa- Sides and transverse process of T12-L5 vertebrae and discs between them.
Da- Lesser trochanter of femur
N/s- Anterior rami of L1-L3
A- Flexion and external rotation of hip, stabilises hip when standing.
Flex and side bend truck -lumbar region
Iliopsoas- iliacus
Pa- Iliac crest and fossa, sacral ala
Da- Lesser trochanter of femur
N/s- Femoral nerve
A- Flexion and external rotation of hip, stabilises hip when standing.
Sartorius
Pa- Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
Da- Superior part of medial surface of tibia (part of pes anserine)
N/s- Femoral nerve
A- Flexion, abduction, external rotation of hip. Flexion and internal of knee joint.
Quadriceps Femoris - Rectus femoris
Pa- Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS)
Da- quadriceps tendon to base of patella and patellar tendon from apex of patella to tibial tuberosity
N/s- Femoral nerve
A- Extend knee joint and flex hip.
Quadriceps femoris - Vastus Lateralis
Pa- Greater trochanter and lateral lip linea aspera
Da-quadriceps tendon to base of patella and patellar tendon from apex of patella to tibial tuberosity

Biceps femoris
Pa- Long head: Ischial tuberosity
Short head: linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line of femur
Da - head of fibula
N/s - long head: tibial division of sciatic nerve
Short head: common fibular divison of sciatic nerve
A- Flex and externally rotate knee joint.
Long head can extend hip.
