Glucose test Flashcards
What are lipids?
These are molecules that contain Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. But they contain a smaller proportion of oxygen than Carbohydrates.
They come in three main types:
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Steroids
What are carbohydrates?
These are molecules that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only.
They come in three main types:
Monosaccharides
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
Step by step how to test for glucose?
Step 1: Place substance in boiling tube
Step 2: Add 1cm³ of Benedict’s Reagent
Step 3: Boil in a water bath for 5 minutes
Positive colour change: Blue to Brick Red
What does it mean if solution is blue?
No reducing sugar (0g%)
What does it mean if solution turns green?
Traceable amount of reducing sugar (0.5-1g%)
What does it mean if solution turns yellow?
Low amount of reducing sugar (1-1.5g%)
What does it mean if solution turns orange-red?
Moderate amount of reducing sugar (1.5-2g%)
What does it mean if solution turns brick red?
High amount of reducing sugar (>2g%)
What are these results known as being?
semi-quantitative.
Why is the glucose test known as semi quantitative?
Semi-quantitative examinations are similar to qualitative examinations because testing does not measure the precise quantity of a substance. The difference is that results of these tests are expressed as an estimate of how much of a measured substance is present. This estimate is sometimes reported as a number.
Whats the colour change order depending on the amount of glucose in a solution?
Blue-green-yellow-orangered-brickred
