gluconeogenesis and glucose homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
gluconeogenesis
A
the synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors e.g. lactate, AAs [alanine], glycerol [triacylglycerols]
2
Q
glucose requirements
A
- brain and red blood cells require glucose as a fuel.
- daily requirement=160g
- glycogen stores=190g
- therefore glycogen stores have enough glucose to last ~ 1 day
3
Q
gluconeogenesis pathway
A
reversal of glycolysis except for 3 steps:
1) pyruvate to PEP
2) F1,6BP to F6P
3) G6P to glucose.
these steps are irreversible in glycolysis, so require different enzymes and energy inputs.
