Gluconeogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Gluconeogenesis?
A
It is the biosynthesis of new glucose, not glucose from glycogen.
It occurs mainly in the liver and sometimes in the kidney and SI.
It is almost the reverse RXN of glycolysis, having three unique RXNs to overcome the irreversible steps of glycolysis.
It is an anabolic process which requires energy in the form of ATP/GTP to convert Pyruvate –> Glucose.

Q
What are the primary carbon skeletons for Gluconeogenesis?
A
The primary carbon skeletons are derived from: pyruvate, lactate, glycerol, alanine and glutamine.
(Commonly using AA and lactate)
