A
- increased number of RBCs
- decreased lymphocytes, eosinophyls, basophils, monocytes
- helps maintain capillary integrity
- maintain blood pressure and blood glucose levels
- promote sodium and water retention
- potassium excretion

Pharmacological Actions
A
- increased glucose levels
- fat deposition
- sodium retention
- potassium loss
- decreased GI absorption of calcium
- suppression of lymphocytes
- inhibitions of chemical mediators for inflammation
- decreased protein synthesis

Adverse Effects
A
- bone fractures
- suppresses bone formation and decreases calcium absorption in the GI
- inhibits prostaglandin synthesis which causes peptic ulcer disease
- cataracts/ glaucome
- glucose intolerance = hyperglycemia
- psychologic disturbance
- growth retardation

Contraindications
A
- systemic fungal infections
- live virus immunizations

Precautions
A
- pregnancy
- lactation

Drug Interactions
A
- NSAIDS
- Diuretics - watch K+ levels
- digoxin - watch K+ levels
- insulin

Administration
A
- need a med ID if on this drug for a long period of time
- take as directed - don’t skip
- take med before 9am
- stress = increased glucocorticoid
- withdraw gradually - body can’t produce it fast enough to make up for the change in levels
