Tree ring dating
Estimate age of trees, by counting rings of a tree trunk, where it has been cut
Dynasty
Period of time when one family controls government, usually over multiple generations
Evidence
Information provided by a source that supports a given interpretations or provides support for possible answers to inquiry questions
Hierarchy
Organising things from top down, in order of importance or significance
Ancient societies had strict hierarchies with the ruler at the top, and peasants at the bottom
Hypotheses (plural form)
Considered opinion, theory or statement
Based on research and evidence
About something not proven yet
Perspective
Point of view about and event or issue
Persons perspective is often influenced by their knowledge, culture or beliefs
Perspective changes from person to person
Polytheism
Belief in multiple gods
Eg. Ancient Egypt
Prehistory
Time period before written language was around
Primary Source
Source made during the time period of study
Radiocarbon Dating
Estimate the age of a once living thing
Amount of radioactive carbon within the object is tested
Gives a good indication of age
Secondary Source
Source made AFTER the time period of study
Eg. Websites, textbooks
Society
Community of people living in a particular area who have a shared culture, customs and laws
Stratigraphy
Study of earths strata/layers
Approximate age of remains from the past, depending on which layer they were found in
