Creed
A commitment to and profession of faith. The Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed are examples of Catholic creeds.
Apostolic
Sent by the authority of Jesus to continue his mission on earth. The Church is apostolic because it was founded by Jesus Christ upon the apostles.
Catholic
One of the three major strands of Christianity. Comes from a Greek word that means ‘whole’ - this is translated as universal and inclusive.
Holy
To be set apart for God according to his plans. All Christian people are called to be Holy.
Missionary
A person who is sent by Church authority to preach the Gospel, or help strengthen the faith already professed, among people in a particular place
Proclaim
To announce the initial message of the Good News about Jesus Christ, that Jesus died and rose from the dead for the salvation of all.
Martyr
Someone who has given their life as a consequence of the faith.
Conscience
A person’s most secret core and sanctuary, where the person can recognise the echoes of the voice of God.
Moral Virtue
Virtues are special graces given by God to the soul to be able to do good and loving things. E.g. Prudence, Temperance, Justice, Fortitude
Personal Ideal
A standard or moral principle to which people aspire in their lives
Guilt
A bad feeling that occurs when a person does something wrong
Natural Law
The law of God that is inscribed into human nature
Divine Law
The Laws given to man by God and through Jesus (e.g. Ten Commandments, Jesus’ Two Commandments)
Responsible Moral Decision
The right action to take in a situation. The three elements to consider are action, intention and circumstance.
Sin
Any deliberate thought, word or action that goes against the laws of God
