Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds create internal rhyming e.g. slice of ice
Alliteration
The same sound is repeated at the start of words that are close together
Caesura
Strong pause in a line
Cinquain
5 lines stanza
Connotation
The meanings implied by a particular word
Consonance
The repetition of the same consonant pattern two or more times in short succession, e.g. slither slather
Couplet
Two lines that rhyme
End stopped lines
Full stop at end of line
Enjambment
Lines that run over with no punctuation
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration
Imagery
To use figurative language to create a vivid picture in the mind of the reader
Juxtaposition
Two directly contrasting ideas
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares unlike objects, e.g. anger burned in his heart, butterflies in your stomach
Monologue
A long speech by one person
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like a sound - crash, pop, whiz
Oxymoron
A figure of speech that joins together words of opposite meaning bittersweet, living dead
Persona
The character/persons in the poem
Personification
When animals or objects are said to have human characteristics
Plosive consonants
Harsh consonants such as ‘b’ and ‘p’
Poetic voice
The speaker in the poem
Quatrain
4 lined stanza
Refrain
A verse or poem that is repeated at intervals throughout a song or poem, usually after the chorus or stanza
Rhyme
When two or more words have the same sound at the end of a line (internal/near)
Semantic field
A group of words that together create a theme in a text
