Simile
A phrase used to compare something to something else, using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
You were as brave as a lion.
The explanation was as clear as mud.
It was like watching paint dry.
Metaphor
A descriptive phrase that says something is something that it is not.
Eg all the world’s a stage.
The dark night fell on them.
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that sound like the sound they are describing.
Eg splash, crash, giggle, gurgle, whizz
Often sounds of water, air, vocal, collision etc
Alliteration
A repeated letter or sound at the beginning of several words.
Eg Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper
Figurative language
Language that is not literal and is used to achieve a particular effect.
Eg we use figurative language to add colour and interest and creates pictures in the mind of the reader.
Eg he ran fast (literal)
He ran like the wind (figurative)
Personification
Making something that is not a person sound like a person.
Eg the trees whispered softly.
Synonym
A word that has a similar meaning to another.
Eg clever, intelligent
Antonym
A word that means the opposite.
Eg dark, light
Homonym
Words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.
Homophone
Words that sound the same but are spelled differently.
Suffix
A group of letters added to the end of a word, changing or adding to its meaning.
Prefix
A group of letters added to the beginning of a root word to change its meaning.
Root word
A basic word with no prefix or suffix added to it.
