World Health Organisation (WHO) definition of health
A state of complete physical, emtnal and social-wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or injury.
Physical Health
Physical Fitness, body weight, blood cholesterol, blood pressure, level of fitness, feelings of wellbeing, energy, body system functions.
Social Health
Freidnship networks, being a part of a group or team, relationships with family, state of relationship with school/work mates, social needs meet
Mental Health
Self-esteem, confidence, level of stress, feelings, thought patterns
Emotional Health
Attitude, maintain life balance by setting priorities, seek support by expressing emotion appropriately, remaining aware of thoughts and feelings.
Spiritual Health
Ideas, beliefs, values and ethics.
Indicators
Incidence, prevelance, morbidity, DALY, Burden of disease, YLL, YLD, Mortality, Life expectancy, sef-assessed health status.
Life Expectancy
An indication of how long a person is expected to live for. It is a number o years of life remaining to person at a particular age if death rates do not change.
Mortality
Refers to death caused by a particular disease, illness, or other environmental factors.
Morbidity
Ill health (disease, illness, environmental factors)
Incidence
Number of new cases of a condition in a given time period (usually 12 months)

Total number of cases of a condition at a given time
Years of life lost (YLL)
The number of years of life lost due to premature death
year of life lost to disability (YLD)
One YLD is equal to one ‘healthy’ year of life lost to time liven with illness, injury, or disability.
Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY)
1 DALY is equal to one year of ‘healthy’ life lost due to living with a disability/illness as well as time die to premature death
DALY = YLL + YLD
Burden Of Disease
Combination of nortality and morbidity data so that conditions that contribute differently to health and wellness can be compared
e.g - cancer causes a lot of health and illness while chronic conditions such as asthma caused illness but less death.
Health Status
Health Status is the level of health being experienced by an individual or population after taking into account factors such as life expectancy, disability eates and risk of disease.
Sociocultural Factors
Sociocultural factors help determine an individuals or populations health and wellbeing, and are considered to be anything related to the social and cultural conditions into which people are born, grow, live, work and age that work raise or lower the healrg status.
