Glossary Definitions Flashcards
Bacteria Definition
Very simple unicellular organisms that lack a nucleus and other organelles.
Binoculars Microscope Definition
A light microscope that has two ocular lenses.
Cell membrane Definition
The skin that holds the cell together, it controls what comes into and leaves the cell.
Cell culture Definition
Growing cells separately from organisms in the laboratory.
Cells Definition
The building blocks of all living things.
Cell wall definition
A rigid layer on the outside of a plant cell, provides the skeleton of the plant.
Chloroplasts Definition
An organelle within the cell where photosynthesis takes place.
Cytoplasm Definition
A watery, jelly like mixture that contains many smaller parts where the work of the cell takes place.
Electron Microscope Definition
A type of microscope that uses beams of electrons to magnify up to a million times. There are two types of electron microscopes: transmission Electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes.
Endoplasmic reticulum Definition
Pathways along which materials move through a cell.
Field of view Definition
The amount of the specimen seen through a microscope.
Guard cells Definition
Cells that work in pairs to open and close the stomata.
Image definition
What is seen using a microscope.
Light microscope Definition
A microscope that uses light to reveal the image.
Lysosomes Definition
Organelles that get rid of wastes from cell.
Magnification Definition
The amount by which the image is magnified compared to the real object.
Magnified Definition
Made bigger
Micrometer Definition
One thousandth of a millimetre
Microscope
An instrument used to make very small things bigger.
Microscopic definition
Describes objects that can only be seen using a microscope.
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell, where the energy is released from food.
Mitosis Definition
Cell division that produces two identical cells.
Monocular microscope Definition
A light microscope that has only one ocular lens
Multicellular organisms Definition
Living things made of many cells
