Define population
the whole set of items that are of interest
Define sample
a subset of the population intended to represent the population
Define sampling unit
each individual thing in the population that can be sampled
Define sampling frame
the list formed by individually naming or numbering the sampling units in the population
Define census
the data that is collected from the entire population
Define qualitative data
any data that is NOT numerical
Define quantitative data
any data that IS numerical
Define discrete data
any data that has to be a specific value e.g. shoe size
Define continuous data
any data that can be ANY value possible within a specified range
Define measures of location
values which describe a position in the data set
Define measures of central tendency
something to do with the centre of the data
Define measures of spread
something to do with how the data is spread out
Define standard deviation
a value that shows how far away individual numbers are from the mean
Define an outlier (in the context of box plots)
a value in a data set that typically is 1.5 IQRs beyond the lower and upper quartiles
