Glossary - Chapter 1 Flashcards
Atmosphere
The gases surrounding the Earth. Different layers are characterised by their temperature, density, turbulence and composition
Ambient Gases
The surrounding environmental gases that are available to organisms
Biosphere
All the living organisms on Earth
Enzyme Function
They are biological catalysts
Greenhouse Gas
A gas that absorbs infrared radiation and causes atmospheric heating
Hydrosphere
All the water in Earth, found in solid, liquid or gaseous form
Lithosphere
The relatively hard outer layer if the Earth, consisting if the crust and upper layer if the mantle
Photolysis
The reaction of water with sunlight
Specific Heat Capacity
The measure of the amount of heat energy needed to heat up a particular mass of a material through a particular temperature rise
Thermophilic
Heat-loving, such as the bacteria that live around heat springs and volcanic vents
Transpiration
The movement of water through plants. Comes out of the stomata
Physiological Function
Any substance that is involved in chemical reactions in a living organism has a physiological function
