Glossary Flashcards
Active runway
Any runway or runways currently being used for takeoff or landing. When multiple runways are used they are all considered active runways. When an aircraft is landing or taking off on an airport surface other than a runway, the direction of flight will determine the active runway.
Absolute altitude
Actual height above the earth’s surface
Advisory airspace
Class F airspace of defined dimensions within which an activity such as pilot training, soaring, etc. is carried out and of which non – participating pilots should be aware. Non – participating pilots may enter advisory airspace at their own discretion but extra vigilance is essential
Advisory service
Advice and information provided by a facility to assist pilots in the safe conduct of flight and aircraft movement
Aerodrome
Any area of land or water (including the frozen surface) or other supporting surface used or designed, prepared, equipped or set apart for the arrival and departure, movement or servicing of aircraft. It includes any buildings, installations and equipment in connection therewith.
Aerodrome elevation (or field elevation)
Elevation of the highest point of the landing area.
Aerodrome traffic
All traffic on the maneuvering area of an aerodrome and all traffic flying in, entering or leaving and aerodrome circuit.
Aerodrome traffic frequency (ATF)
A VHF frequency designated for use of radio equipped aircraft operating on the surface or in the vicinity of certain specified uncontrolled airports.
Aerodrome traffic zone
Class G airspace of defined dimensions extending upwards from the surface of the earth.
Aerodynamic coefficients
Non-dimensional coefficients for aerodynamic forces and moments (ie drag and lift coefficients)
Airborne collision avoidance system (ACAS)
An aircraft system based on secondary surveillance radar (SSR) transponder signals which operate independently of ground – based equipment to provide advice to the pilot on potential conflicting aircraft that are equipped with SSR transponders. ACAS equipment designed and manufactured in the US is called traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS).
Air carrier
A person who operates a commercial air service.
Aircraft
Any machine capable of deriving support in the atmosphere from the reactions of the air.
Aircraft engine
An engine used for propelling an aircraft. It includes turbochargers, appurtenances and accessories necessary for functioning, but does not include propellers
Air Defense identification zone
Airspace of defined dimensions within which the ready identification, location and control of aircraft is required
