Attachment
an emotional bond between two people in a two way process which endures over time and leads to certain behaviours and proximity-seeking which can protect an infant.
Caregiver
any person who is providing care for a child, eg: mother, father or grandparents.
Reciprocity
when a caregiver and child respond to each other’s signals, initiate then response which responses are not necessarily coping, eg: a baby cries so mum cuddles it.
Intersectional synchrony
caregiver and infants interact by mirroring each other’s responses, actions or emotions.
Inter-rater reliability
two or more people are observing and recording behaviour in the same way
Intra-rater reliability
consistency of an individual measuring/recording a behaviour
Pseudo
not genuine or a sham
Multiple attachment
having more than one attachment
Primary attachment figure
the person who has formed the closest bond with a child, demonstrated by intensity of the relationship
Separation anxiety
the distress shown by an infant when separated from a caregiver
Stranger anxiety
the distress shown by an infant when approached or picked up by someone who’s unfamiliar
