What is a Caesura?
A natural pause or break in a line of poetry. For Example “To be, or not to be - that is the question”
What is Enjambment?
When a sentence flows onto the next line. For Example
“And for what good was
He for that.”
What is a Rhyming Couplet?
Two lines that form a rhyme. For Example “Double double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble”
What is a Stanza?
A verse of a poem, the way the poem is divided into chunks.
What is Juxtaposition?
Contrasting words close together, words or phrase that don’t seem to match. For Example, “Iron Teacups”.
What is an Oxymoron?
Two complete opposites put close together to create a contrast.
What is Sibilance?
A hissing sound created by repetition of ‘S’ sound.
What is a Hyperbole?
Deliberated Exaggeration. For Example, “A flood of tears” “He waited for ages”
What is Allegory?
Something symbolic, sometimes a story that represents larger things, like the tortoise and the hare
What is Allusion?
Unacknowledged reference or quotations that the writer thinks the reader will recognise.
What is Ambiguity?
A word or idea meaning more than one thing to provoke thought. For Example, “Jake saw her duck” which has a DOUBLE MEANING.
What is Analogy?
A comparison of two things.
What is Anaphora?
Repetition of the same word or phrase throughout a section of a work.
What is Assonance?
Repetition of identical vowel sounds in different words. For Example “Deep Green Sea”
