Q

Why are structured interviews ideal for quantitative research?

A

Questions are closed, there is a fixed topic, fixed order questions and very clear roles between the participant and the experimenter.
Expansion is only allowed if pre-determined.
The outcome is specific answers and/or numerical data

6
Q

Why are semi-structured interviews good for focused qualitative research?

A

Has open-ended questions surrounding an open topic, question order can vary, and expansion is encouraged, making the outcome unexpected answers and verbal data.
Roles between researcher and participant are almost equal

8
Q

Why are unstructured interviews used in pilot qualitative research?

A

They use one-on-one interviewing. including smaller samples which is better for qualitative research

Q

What was the De Visser and Smith (2006) study about?

A

Hegemonic (the only way to do something) masculinity is expected in behaviour patterns among men.
Case study on a 19-year-old names Rahul - Indian born & UK raised. Went to a private school in London but was not rich.
Experimenters conducted a semi-structured interview about how he spent his free time. Including prompts about drinking alcohol, sexual activity, exercise and sport. Clustered potential themes were identified.

Q

Benefits of qualitative case studies are?

16
Q

What happened in the Lyon and Willott (2008) study?

A

Eight focus groups consisting of three to five people - plus one or two female interviewers.
Participants = 16 men and 16 women aged 20-29 from Auckland.
The study provided insights into ways alcohol was used to actively perform gender and construct women drinkers as vulnerable

17
Q

Cons of focus groups include…

A
  • Pre-existing friend groups can lead to assumptions and tensions
  • Unknown participants form new relations
  • It is not a natural environment
  • People talk over one another
  • If no one dominates the discussion, it can ve a very shallow-level and unfulfilling focus group scenario
18
Q

Pros of focus groups in research include…

A
  • Pre-existing friends can talk about shared experiences
  • Unknown participants can provide a deeper explanation of one anothers’ concepts
  • A good interviewer can steer the conversation while making it feel like a natural environment to discuss the topic in
19
Q

The two components of informed consent are…

A
  1. Informing - of the content, topic and possible themes of study
  2. Getting consent - usually in the form of a gifned consent form
20
Q

Under which scenarios can you never use deception instead of informed consent?

A

With child participants and in qualitative research

21
Q

Debreifing consists of

A

Disclosing any deception and to offer information about sources of help - when necessary

22
Q

What is photo elicitation?

A

Using photos as prompts in interviews

23
Q

The smallest possible sample in research is called?

A

A case study

24
Q

Three types of media elicitation are

A
  1. Researcher-led media elicitation
  2. Participant-led “ “
  3. Primary media analysis
25
Q

Describe researcher-led media elicitation

A
  • Media stimuli pre-selected by researchers
  • Can be real media or mock media
26
Q

Describe participant-led media elicitation

A
  • Can be spontaneously mentioned or requested
  • Media gathered by participants - can be done in real time
27
Q

Describe primary media analysis

A

Possible researcher-led media elicitation - showing inside out (movie) an having interviews or focus groups
- Possible participant-led media elicitation - asking participants to bring and share their own media on gender and emotions (inside out example)

28
Q

The Jones et al (2013) study aimed to…?

A

collect and understand insights of Māori parents with children with asthma. Beliefs about asthma management and their experiences/challenges in achieving optimum asthma outcomes.
Recruited 32 Māori whanau with at least one child with asthma. Children aged between 5 and 12 years.
