Glossary Flashcards
Define ACCELERATION
change in velocity per second (in metres per second squared m/s2)
define DECELERATION
Change of velocity per second when an object slows down
Define DISPLACEMENT
Distance in a given direction
From “dis” place to “dis” place
Define GRADIENT (Of a Straight Line Graph)
Change of the quantity plotted on the Y-axis divided by the changeof the quantity plotted on the X-axis
Define TANGENT
A straight line drawn to touch a point on a curve so it has the same gradient as the curve at that point .
Define VELOCITY
Speed in a given direction ( in metres /second, M/S)
(Velocity = Velociraptor. 1 is enough do not square. Acceleration is squared because you want to be TOO (2) fast for them to catch you)
Define BIOFUEL
Any fuel taken from living or recently living materials such as animal dung, plant products. ( fossil fuels are older and a limited resource, biofuels can be grown, harvested reliably)
Define CARBON NEUTRAL
A biofuel from a living organism that takes in as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its lifetime as is released when burnt.
Define GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Energy released by radioactive substances deep within the Earth
Imagine Dragons singing Radioactive deep within the earth and the concert is really hot and gives off good energy
Define NATIONAL GRID
The network of cables and transformers used to transfer electricity from power stations to consumer ( homes, shops, offices, factories etc) for the nation.
Bumblebee is a transformer and cable tv send the film everywhere. Cables and transformers =national grid
Define NUCLEAR FUEL
Substance used in nuclear reactors that releases energy due to nuclear fission
Nuclear fuel creates a reaction so is found in reactors ( not your home or Lidl!) it makes energy due to fission. Coke in Lidl = fizz , nuclear fuel = fission.
Define NUCLEUS
Tiny positively charged object made of protons and neutrons at the centre of every atom
Define REACTOR CORE
The thick steel vessel used to contain fuel rods, control rods and the moderator in a nuclear fission reactor.
Reactor core is like a reddit forum, some add fuel to the fire others react and moderators keep it under control stop explosions
Define RENEWABLE ENERGY
Energy from natural sources that is always being replenished so it never runs out.
Water, wind, solar, biofuels, geothermals, hydroelectricity, tides.
Define DRIVING FORCE
The force of a vehicle that makes it move (aka Motive Force)
Whats the driving force behind the project? Whats your MOTIVE- ation
Define FORCES
A force (in Newtons, N) can change the motion of an object
Change the motion, force can!
Define FREE-BODY FORCE DIAGRAM
A diagram showing that shows the forces acting in an object without any other objects or forces shown
The body is free from forces/objects - Free-body
Showing the force used
Define FRICTION
The force opposing the relative motion of 2 solid surfaces in contact
Define MAGNITUDE
The size or amount of a physical quantity
Like earthquakes magnitude
Magnitude of the consequences if actions
Define NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION
If the resultant force on an object is zero, the object stays at rest if it is stationary , or it keeps moving with the same speed in the same direction.
If the firce is zero/nithing , nothin* changes stays still ir keeps moving same as before
Define NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION
When two objects interact with each other (collide) they will exert an equal and opposite forces on each other
Any action has an equal and opposite reaction
Define PARALLELOGRAM OF FORCES
A geometrical method used to find the resultant of two forces that do not act along the same line
Imagine a rectangle and the top and bottom move in opposite directions turning it into a parallelogram
Define RESULTANT FORCE
A single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on the object.
If you have 75 N pushing right and 50 N pushing left on an object the resultant force is 25 N pushing right
Define SCALAR
A physical quantity such as mass or energy, that has magnitude ONLY (unlike a vector which has magnitude and direction)
