Alliteration
Repetition of sounds in two or more neighboring words
Allusion
A Direct reference to something which is commonly known
Ambiguity
The multiple meanings of a word,phrase or passage
Andiplosis
The repetition of the last word of a clause at the beginning of the following clause
Analogy
A comparison between two different things or the relationship between them
Anaphora
Devices of repetition, the same expression is repeated at the beginning of two or more lines
Anecdote
A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event
Antecedent
The word referred to by a pronoun
Aphorism
At terse statement known authorship which expresses a general truth or moral principle
Apostrophe
A figure of speech that directly addresses and absent person or personified abstract
Atmosphere
The emotional mood created by the entire tea of an literary work, established partly by setting and authors word choice
Allegory
The device of using character elements symbolically to represent an abstract in addition to the literal meaning
Clause
A grammatical unit that contains both a subject and a verb
Colloquial/ colloquialism
Use if slang or in formalities in speech or writing
Coherence
Principle-Parts of the composition be arranged so that the meaning of the whole may be clear and intelligible.
Conceit
A fanciful expression, in form of an extended metaphor or surprising analogy between dissimilar objects
Connotation
Nonliteral, associative meaning of a word; the implied, suggested meaning
Denotation
The literal definition of a word , without any emotions
Diction
Refers to writers word choices,especially with regard to their correctness, clearness, or effectiveness
Didactic
From geek it means ‘teaching’. Works have the primary aim of teaching or instructing , especially moral or ethical principles
Epistrophe
Repetition at the END of successive clauses
Euphemism
From Greek for ‘good speech’ euphemisms are a more agreeable substitute for a generally unpleasant word or concept
Exposition
It’s purpose is to explain something. In drama it’s the introductory material, which creates the tone, gives the settings, and introduces the characters and conflict
Extended metaphor
A metaphor that occurs frequently throughout a work
Figurative language
Writing or speech that does not carry literal meaning and is usually meant to be imaginative and vivid
Figure of speech
A decide used to produce figurative language. Includes hyperbole, simile, metaphor, and many more.
Genre
The major category Intel why’ve a literary work fits. Basic divisions of literature~ prose,poetry, and drama
Homily
A ‘sermon’ ,but more informally, it can include any serious talk, speech, or lecture involving moral or spiritual advice.
Hyperbole
A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement Often had a comic offer but can have a serious effect too
