GLOMERULAR DISORDERS Flashcards
Deposition of immune complex, formed in conjunction of Group A
Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes)
Acute Post-streptococcal Glomerulonephritis
Deposition of immune complexes from systemic immune disorders
(ex: SLE) on the glomerular membrane
Rapidly Progressive (Crescentic) Glomerulonephritis
Deposition of antig-lomerular basement membrane antibody to
glomerular and alveolar basement membranes
Goodpasture Syndrome
Anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic auto-antibody (ANCA) binds to
neutrophils in vascular walls producing damage to small vessels in the
lungs and glomerulus
Wegener’s Granulomatosis
Occurs in children following viral respiratory infections; Decrease in platelets disrupts vascular integrity
Henoch Schonlein Purpura
Thickening of glomerular membrane following IgG immune complex
deposition associated with systemic disorders
Membranous Glomerulonephritis
‘Cellular proliferation affecting the capillary walls or the glomerular
basement membrane, possibly immune mediated
Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis
Marked decrease in renal function resulting from glomerular
damage precipitated by other renal disorders
Chronic Glomerulonephritis
Deposition of IgA on the glomerular membrane resulting from
increased levels of IgA
IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s Disease)
Little cellular changes in the glomerulus;Disruption of podocytes primarily in children following
aliergic reactions & immunizations
Minimal Change Disease (Nil Disease/Lipoid Nephritis)
Disruption of podocytes in certain numbers and areas o glomeruli,
others remain normal
Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis
Most common cause of ESRD; Deposition of glycosylated proteins on the glomerular basement membranes caused by poorly controlled blood glucose levels
Diabetic Nephropathy (Kimmelstiel-Wilson Disease)
Genetic disorder showing lamellated and thinning of glomerular
basement membrane
Alport Syndrome
Disruption of the electrical charges that produce the tightly fitting
podocyte barrier resulting to massive loss of proteins and lipids
Nephrotic Syndrome
