Globe and Maps Flashcards
What are the limitations of Globe?
It is not able to give us detailed information about a particular place like landforms, roads, railways etc
It is expensive, bulky and awkward to carry around
It is not possible to enlarge a specific area on a globe
It does not show the details or small parts to help with directions
What is Globe?
Globe is a miniature model of the earth which gives us fairly accurate idea of the earth’s surface.
Name five major oceans
Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean Southern Ocean Arctic Ocean
What are continents?
The large land masses on earth’s surface are called continents.
Name seven continents
Asia Europe Africa Australia North America South America Antarctica
What are oceans?
Large water bodies on the surface if the earth are called oceans
What is a map?
A map is a two dimensional representation of the earth on a flat surface.
What is cartography?
The art of drawing maps is called cartography.
What is cartographer?
The person who draws maps is called cartographer
What is a grid?
The network of horizontal and vertical lines on the globe that helps us to locate places is called grid or graticule.
What is an axis of a globe?
The globe rotates through imaginary rod that passes through it. It is called axis.
What is North Pole?
The end point of the imaginary axis on a globe at the north is called North Pole.
What is South Pole?
The end point of the imaginary axis on a globe at the south is called South Pole.
What is a lattitude?
Latitude is an imaginary line that runs from east to west around the earth. There are 181 parallel latitudes drawn on a globe.
What is equator?
An imaginary line drawn halfway between North Pole and South Pole is called equator.
What is northern hemisphere?
The part of the earth to the north of equator is called northern hemisphere.
What is Southern Hemisphere?
The part of the earth to the south of equator is called southern hemisphere.
What are northern latitudes?
All latitudes to the north of equator are called northern latitudes.
What are southern latitudes?
All latitudes to the south if equator are called southern latitudes.
What does latitude help to determine?
Latitudes help to determine climate and location if places
What is Tropic of Cancer?
It is the latitude that lies to the north of equator at an angle of 23 1/2 degree North
What is Tropic of Capricorn?
It is the latitude that lies to the south of equator at an angle of 23 1/2 degree South.
What is arctic circle?
It is the latitude that lies to the north of equator at an angle of 66 1/2 degree North
What is Antarctic circle?
It is the latitude that lies to the south of equator at an angle of 66 1/2 degree South
What is the latitude of North Pole
90 degree North
What is the latitude of South Pole?
90 degree South
What are longitudes?
Imaginary vertical lines joining North Pole and South Pole are called meridians of longitude.678
Are longitudes parallel?
No. They are semi circles of equal length.
Are latitudes of equal length?
No.
Are longitudes of equal length?
Yes
What is prime meridian?
The longitude that passes though Greenwich near London that is taken as 0 degree longitude is called prime meridian.
Why the lines of longitude are called meridians?
The lines of longitude are called meridians because all places along the same longitude experience noon or midday at the same time.
How many meridians are there on globe?
- 180 towards east and 180 towards west.
What are east longitudes?
All longitudes towards east of prime meridians are called east longitudes.
What are west longitudes?
All longitudes towards west of prime meridians are called west longitudes.
What does longitude help to determine?
Longitudes help to determine time
What is the time interval between to longitudes?
4 minutes
Which longitude is opposite to 180 degree meridian?
Prime meridian ( 0 degree longitude )
Which meridian is opposite to 165 degree east longitude?
15 degree west longitude
What are the important meridians of longitudes?
Prime meridian
International Date Line
What is International Date Line?
It is an imaginary line on the surface if the earth passing through Pacific Ocean that separates two consecutive calendar days. It is roughly along 180 degree longitude and separates the eastern and Western Hemispheres. It is not completely straight, it deviates slightly at certain points to avoid confusion of time within a distance of half a kilometer over land.
How do we locate a place on globe?
Parallels of latitudes and meridians of longitudes are used to locate places on a map or globe. For eg Mumbai is at 19 N latitude and 73 E longitude.
What are the three main types of maps?
Political Maps
Physical Maps or Relief Maps
Climatic Maps
What is a political map?
Political maps show boundaries of continents, countries, states, capitals, districts, towns and villages.
What is physical map?
Physical map gives detailed information about the surface of the earth such as landforms and water bodies. These maps helps to know in detail about physical features like mountains, plateau, plains and river valleys etc that’s are shown by using different colors. It’s also called relief maps.
What is climatic map?
Climatic map shows temperature, rainfall, wind direction and pressure of a particular place. The data on these maps keeps changing constantly due to changing climatic conditions.
What is atlas?
A collection of maps in a book is called atlas
What are cardinal directions and sub directions?
Four major directions are called cardinal directions. These are north, south, east and west.
The directions between cardinal directions are called sub directions. These are north east, north west, south east and south west.
Which direction map always indicate?
North. The letter N is labelled at the tip of an arrow.
What is a scale on a map?
Scale indicates the relationship between a certain distance on the map and the distance on the ground.
What are the color schemes on a map?
Different color schemes are used to show features on the map.
Brown indicates mountains and highlands
Blue indicates water bodies
Green indicates natural vegetation
Yellow indicates desert regions
What all things help read a map?
- Title stating if it is political, physical or climatic
- Direction
- Scale
- Color schemes
- Conventional signs and symbols like rails, roads, rivers, temples, bridges
