Are we in a phase of discovery of protection?

A

Protection. It’s not just important to protect the product itself but also the person behind the product. This is where PDOs and PGIs come in.

Q

What is a PDO?

A

Protected Designation of Origin. Certain product such as varieties of olives or balsamic vinegar that are tied to their place of origin. The specific terroir, history and traditions of those places mean that their specialty foods simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. Products with this status means that the names of those products are not to be used outside of their designated region and its specific requirements.
For example: According to the Aceto Baismamico Tradizionale di Modena PDO must be made from locally produced grapes which are then processed in that same area in which the production and bottling takes place.

Q

PDO vs PGI

A

All the phases of production, processing and elaboration of a PDO product must take place within a specific geographical area. In the PGI, instead, only one of them must take place within a specific territory.

As a result, PDOs are subject to stricter regulations, the rules of which are enforced by a control authority of the European Union, which is also the body that issues both trademarks.
