What is Accommodation?
The process of allowing minority groups express their collective identities.
What is Acculturation?
When a Minority Group adapts or even absorbs the culture of the majority at their own pace.
What is an example of Affirmation of Identity?
The Pride Parades held in Vancouver, allowing the LGBTQ+ community feel accepted and express their identity.
What is Assimilation?
When a Minority is forced to conform to the majority.
What is a Case Study?
A detailed examination of something that has occurred in the real world.
What is Cultural Revitalisation?
When there is an attempt to preserve a dying out or not well known culture, as well as helping that culture affirm their identity.
What is Globalisation?
The process of making the worlds people more connected and interdependent.
What is the Global South?
Located in the southern hemisphere, it contains underdeveloped countries, often having less wealth compared to the Global North. ex. Africa, India
What is the Global North?
Located in the Northern Hemisphere, the countries located there are well developed economically and is very industrialised. ex. Australia, Japan, America, Canada
What is Homogenisation?
The act of reducing cultural diversity by making everyone the same.
What is Hybridisation?
When two or more Cultures are Blended together.
What are Ideological Beliefs?
A set of Beliefs or Opinions of a group or individual.
What is Collective Identity?
The groups you belong to, such as your school, sports team, nationality etc.
What is Individual Identity?
Characteristics that make you unique from others, such as your hobby, interests, favourite food etc.
What is Integration?
The act of adding foreign cultures to the local culture, still maintaining their own.
What is Linguistic Revitalisation?
An attempt to preserve an extinct or current language that is not well known.
What is Marginalisation?
When Minorities are ignored or receive worse treatment because of their culture.
What is Media Concentration and Convergence?
When sources of Media begin to be owned under a few distinct organisations.
What is Migration?
The movement of people from one place to another.
What is a Media Transnational Corporation?
A Corporation whose purpose/business is to distribute or produce entertainment like Movies and TV shows.
Ex. Disney, Netflix, Warner Brothers
What is a Pluralistic Society?
A society made up of many different groups/cultures.
What is the Universalisation of Pop Culture?
The spread of Music, Movies, TV shows etc. all over the world.
What are the three dimensions of Globalisation?
Political, Social and Economic.
