Define Globalization:
The process by which businesses expand and begin operating internationally.
List pros of Globalization:
- creates jobs
- broadens access to goods
- increases cultural awareness
- technology and innovation can be spread worldwide
List cons of Globalization:
- loss of jobs in a first world country due to less labour laws in a third world country
- empower multinational corporations
- does not protect or prioritize human rights, or labour laws
Define Fair Trade
A global movement that is driven by a diverse network of producers, advocates, companies, and organizations that prioritize equitable practices and put the planet and people first.
Ethical Issue Worldwide: Nike
Nike Sweatshops
- CON: low wages, poor work conditions, long hours, children employed
- PRO: better work than feild labour, money is better than local factories, employment
Why is Globalization a “gray area?”
There are both positive and negative aspects. For every issue that affects someone positively, it probably affects a different group negatively.
An example of an ethical dilemma:
A company chooses to outsource its labour to another country’s sweatshops, which increases profitability for shareholders and allows the company to spend less money on employees as labour laws are lack. However now, Canadian workers are unemployed and third world country employees are sweatshop workers for low wages.
