Globalisation policies and policies impacting education today? Flashcards
What is globalisation?
How has a globalised economy changed schooling?
What does the UK education system now participate in?
How does this help develop education in the UK?
Why is this a challenge to implement?
-The process where the world is becoming ever more interconnected, economically, culturally and politically.
-Schools now need to prepare people for different roles(more service sector roles and fewer manufacturing jobs, etc.) and also to operate in a global marketplace.
-The UK education system now competes globally with other countries(e.g. the OECD international league tables).
-Many countries are ahead of the UK in international league tables, so the UK gov’t borrows policy ideas from successful education system(i.e. free schools borrowed from Sweden).
-However, successful systems are often very different(e.g. Finland and Singapore) so it is difficult to know what would work in the Uk’s educational culture.
What do Conservatives propose we should introduce more of in today’s schooling?
What did it propose the end of?
-More grammar schools.
-Conservatives also proposed the end of free school meals for all infants and introducing free breakfasts for primary school children.
What did Labour propose in 2017 regarding tuition fees?
What would be used instead?
What else did labour propose?
SATs?
-Labour proposed the idea of scrapping all tuition fees for university students.
-Instead the UK would have a National Education system: like the NHS.
-Increased funding for early years.
-Free school meals for all primary school children.
-In 2019 they proposed scrapping SAT tests.
What did the Liberal Democrats introduce to economically support children from low income backgrounds?
How much did they propose to increase this introduced relef by for early years of education?
-Pupil premium. Which meant that children from low income backgrounds carried extra funding. This could be spent on resources, facilities or events that would combat the educational impact of material deprivation.
-They proposed trebling this for early years of education.
What are the core themes of education?
-Socialisation: Consensus and conflict theories of education focus on its role(positive or negative) as an agent of socialisation.
-Culture and identity: interactionist and postmodernist theories in particular focus on the themes of culture and identity. Particularly relevant re:relationships and processes within schools.
-Social differentiation: Much of the focus on this theme comes from the study of differential achievement for different social groups and the range fo theories that sekk to explain these patterns.
-Power and stratification: Marxist theories in particular focus on power, and the relationship between education, the state and the ruling class.
