Globalisation Flashcards
What is globalisation?
Globalisation is the process of the world becoming more connected, economically, socially, politically and culturally,
What are the five flows/factors which promote globalisation?
CAPITAL LABOUR INFORMATION PRODUCTS SERVICES
Why do flows of information help globalisation?
The development of social media, the internet and email means people can exchange information, this allows people in different countries to communicate and work together.
Why do flows of capital help globalisation?
money can now flow easily around the world through online banking, also investment to and from other countries creates trade links.
Why do flows of products help globalisation?
Lower labour costs overseas have caused many factories to relocate, they then import the countries to where they are sold.
Why do flows of services help globalisation?
Improvements in ICT have allowed services to become global industries
Why do flows of labour help globalisation?
international migration makes the world connected as people take aspects of their culture with them.
Explain how one advancement in technology has aided globalisation?
advancements in transport mean that people can now travel by aeroplane further, cheaper and faster this increases the flow of labour and flow of people worldwide.
Containerisation also allows goods to be transported across the sea more efficiently.
How do trade agreements remove barriers to trade?
Trade agreements make it much cheaper to trade as they act like a contract where both countries agree to remove any trade controls in place.
How have management systems increased a firms efficiency?
large TNCS can benefit from economics of scale by purchasing specialised equipment and having a comparative advantage.
How can globalisation improve the security of a nation?
Globalisation creates trading relationships between countries, this reduces conflicts between the countries as they are buying and se\ling goods to both benefit. This makes war less likely.
How does globalisation cause economic interdependence?
Countries rely on each other for economic growth.
How does globalisation cause political interdependence?
Countries are dependent on each other to solve issues that cannot be addressed by just one country. e.g. in the 2015 European migrant crisis, the countries of Europe had to work together to support refugees.
Explain how unequal flows of people can cause inequalities.
It is easier for people from developed countries to migrate than people from less developed countries. in 2017, UK citizens could travel to 173 countries without a visa, while citizens of Afghanistan could only travel to 24.
Explain how unequal flows of people can cause conflicts?
Low skilled migrants are often happier to work for less money than low skilled locals. by employing them, companies can depress wages causing conflicts.
