what is globalisation?
globalisation can be defined as the ‘widening deepening and speeding up of world-wide interconnectedness’

how does the media contribute to ‘world-wide interconnectedness”?
the mass media plays a very important role in globalisation.
the media is vital as a means of spreading awareness of events around the world.
it also transmits cultural products like film music and television around the world. much of the output originates in America.
this leads to arguments on whether the medias influence have been positive or negative.
what is culture?
Scott and marshall (2009) define culture as something that is socially are not biologically transmitted.
it refers to all that is learnt from others in society such as norms, values, rules and traditions.
most societies differentiate between high culture, folk culture and popular culture.
what is high culture?
a form of culture which the elite members of a society consider the highest intellectual achievement.
for example, classical music and ballet.
high culture is often regarded as superior to other cultural products.
what is folk culture?
a form of culture which refers to the traditions and rituals of societies which are passed down.
for example, bonfire night.
what is popular culture?
the products of the mass media which are enjoyed by the majority of the population.
for example, tv.
what is homogenisation of culture?
a reduction of cultural diversity that occurs when people abandon their folk cultures and adopt mass produced, global culture.
