globalisation Flashcards
International rankings
• Ranking systems such as PISA, enable education systems to compare performance of students globally
• Governments then use this comparison to examine teaching, learning and assessment strategies
• Alexander suggests it led to a moral panic due to the UKs poor performance and therefore government started to adopt new policies from countries who are succeeding
eg primary schools having to do 2hrs of maths everyday
evaluation of international rankings
:( cherry picking policies from a nation only has a limited impact due to the differences in culture and teaching styles
increase choice of different schools
• the concept of academies come from US charter school system whilst free schools are influenced by the Swedish Education system
• Government educational policy is influenced by the performance of other nations education systems and at the time of selection, both options had evidence of improving outcomes and student experience.
• The New Right approve these as they think policy which moves the power into the hands of schools will increase standards and give a better choice to parents.
evaluation of increased choice of schools
gerwitz - MC families that possess cultural and economic capital are more likely advantaged when it comes to the opportunities that are available to them - middle class benefit more than from choice increase inequality of opportunity
increased migration
• Society is more multi-cultural, and pupils from many ethnic backgrounds now experience education in Britain.
• There have been issues raised by multicultural schools as a result of globalisation, such as ethnic Inequality and ethnocentric curriculum.
• Shown by Ball criticising the national curriculum for ignoring ethnic diversity and promoting an attitude of “little englandism” - ignoring the history of black and asian people.
• As governments have become more aware of this inequality, they have introduced policies to assist disadvantaged groups e.g. language support for Eastern European pupils who are EAL
evaluation of increased migration
:) this increases equality of opportunity for ethnic minorities within the education system
british values and PREVENT
• As a response to the increasing threat of terrorism in the era of globalisation due to technological advancements polices were put in place:
• British values is compulsory in all education establishments to promote ideas of tolerance, rule of law and democracy.
• PREVENT is a legal requirement for educational institutions to report threats of child exploitation, grooming or radicalisation
• The threat of terrorism is seen to be motivated by anti-globalisation feelings and a desire to keep traditional ideals - these policies act as a deterrent against radicalisation to reinforce ideas of a global Britain.
evaluation of british values and prevent
:( argued that the impacts of both british values and PREVENT have been controversial, with some universities challenging it on the grounds of academic freedom and others refusing to police their students
impact on teaching and learning
• National governments feel obligated to tailor education policy to meet the needs of the economy having to produce workers to compare in a global economy.
• Kelly argues globalisation has led to the view that the education system is primarily an economic activity having to vary to meet the needs of individual cultures and circumstances. Have less emphasis on personal and social development.
evaluation of impvat on teaching and learning
privatisation and globalisation
• Ball states that there’s an increasing involvement of private companies in education that are often multinational due to globalisation.
• National governments have less control over education than in the past with education being run through networks involving private companies.
• Eg Edexcel is owned by the US educational publishing and testing giant
Pearson.
evaluation of privatisation and globalisation
Molar shows this by arguing there’s been a Cola-isation of schools with schools becoming a popular way to endorse products and brands eg vending machines on site
loudly there due to brand sponsorship.
