Describe the main causes of global warming (in an economic context).
Transport – 15% of CO2 emissions. A result of globalisation.
Energy production – majority of emissions. Almost entirely in developed countries.
What are the effects of particulate emissions?
Asthma, visual pollution
What are the effects of sea levels rising?
More flooding in coastal areas, population displacement and associated problems
What are the effects of rising temperatures?
Agriculture could become impossible, quality of life will decrease in LEDCs due to extreme weather
How could research be a solution to global warming?
More fuel efficient vehicles could be available, and carbon sequestration technologies could be improved.
How do pollution permits (or carbon credits) work?
Businesses are given pollution permits for a certain amount of pollution. If they do not pollute much, they can sell the permits to other businesses. The number of permits can be steadily decreased.
How does fuel duty work?
A duty is slapped on carbon-producing fuels. They are used less, hence pollution decreases.
How does the subsidisation and promotion of alternative energy propose to reduce global warming?
Fossil fuels are used less –> Less carbon pollution –> Less global warming
How does the Kyoto Protocol work?
It is a set of carbon pollution limits. Most countries have signed up apart from the USA - some take it more seriously than others, however.
Identify some ethical issues to do with global warming.
Developing countries suffer due to developed countries’ industrialisation
Conflict between economic growth and sustainability – which is more important?
Difficulties getting countries to tackle global warming
