Global Warming Flashcards
How much of the Sulphur Dioxide in the air comes from human sources?
99%
Where in particular does Sulphur Dioxide come from?
The combustion of coal.
Why is Sulphur Dioxide a risk to human health?
It can cause breathing problems, difficulty inhaling, and brings irritation to the mouth and nasal passages.
What colour is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is colourless.
Why is Carbon Monoxide a risk?
Red blood cells absorb it, and are not resistant to it. Therefore, it cannot be prevented from entering the body, and high levels of it can cause death.
What is the chemical symbol for Carbon Monoxide?
CO
What does Carbon Monoxide do to the body?
It reduces the amount of oxygen going into the lungs, heart and brain.
What is the scientific term for water pollution?
Eutrophication.
What causes Eutrophication?
Plant fertilisers seeping their way through the soils into rivers, streams and lakes. It also occurs when the fertilisers are washed into rivers/lakes/streams due to heavy rainfall and flooding.
Why is Eutrophication bad?
It increases the algae growth in the water because of the nitrate increase. This algae growth forms a bloom over the water surface, preventing sunlight from reaching other water plants, which subsequently die.
What happens when the water plants die due to Eutrophication?
Bacteria breaks down these dead plants, and use up the oxygen in the water leaving the lake completely lifeless. This water is also unsafe for other animals and plants, and may kill them off.
What is Deforestation?
The cutting down of trees on a mass scale, mainly for fuel or building.
Why is deforestation also bad?
There is second degree damage from the combustion of the carbon from these trees.
Why is deforestation a problem for the whole area?
It brings infertile soil because there are no trees taking up any water.
Why is deforestation a problem for animals?
Animals can lose their homes/territories/habitats and can even be killed in the industrial methods for deforestation.
