Imperial Bureaucracy
The three provinces and six ministries formed a strict and complete system of the feudal bureaucracy, effectively improving administrative efficiency and strengthening the ruling power of the central government.
Dynastic Cycle
The reign over China from ancient times to the end of imperialism, starting with the Xia Dynasty in 2100 B.C. and concluding with the Qing Dynasty in 1911.

“The way of the warrior,” Japanese celebration of the samurai and of military virtues, including bravery, loyalty, and an emphasis on death over surrender.
Seljuk Empire
An empire of the 11th and 12th centuries, centered in Persia and present-day Iraq. Seljuk rulers adopted the Muslim title of sultan as part of their conversion to Islam.
Advances in Mathematics
Adopted the Indian system of numerals, which we know today as Arabic numerals. Other contributions included creating algebra, the use of decimals, mathematical induction, and trigonometry.
Advances in Literature
Islam considered poetry the height of cultural expression. Islamic rulers and wealthy Islamic traders financially supported many Islamic poets. An increase in non-religious literature and expansion of paper making.
Advances in Medicine
Islamic doctors developed new techniques in medicine, dissection, surgery, and pharmacology. They founded the first hospitals, introduced physician training and wrote encyclopedias of medical knowledge.
Ottoman Empire
Major Islamic state centered on Anatolia that came to include the Balkans, the Near East, and much of North Africa; lasted from the 14th to the early 20th century.

Seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God.
Caliphate
An Islamic state or empire ruled by a religious and political leader, known as a caliph.
Umma
The community of all believers in Islam, bound by common belief rather than territory, language, or tribe.

Tax paid by non-Muslim populations to their Muslim ruler
