Compass rose

Cartographers/making maps
A cartographer is a person who makes maps. When making a map always use the five elements of a quality map.

Scale
Tells what the distance is for the section of a map.
Grid
A grid is used to locate places usually on a map of a small place. It is labeled with numbers and letters.
Key
Tells you what symbols mean on a map.
Cardinal directions
Cardinal directions are the basic directions including: -north
-south -east -west
Latitude
Latitude is the line that runs across the EQUATOR.
Longitude
Longitude is the line that runs across the PRIME MERIDIAN.
Equator
The earth’s BELT.
Prime Meridian
The earth’s ZIPPER.
Relative location
Location that is NOT EXACT.
Symbols on a map
The symbols you see on a map will be located in the key.
Map application
When applying things on a map you should make sure you have the 5 elements. You should make sure the more important things are clear.
Culture
Culture is the way of life that different people follow. Culture is very important.
Cultural Traits
Cultural traits are the topics that fit into the idea of culture. An example would be that a car is transportation.
Norms
Norms are unwritten rules. These are things that are expected of you. For example, not screaming in a restaurant is a norm. People expect you to follow it.
Interpreting maps and graphs
- A graph is a chart sort of thing that you put data on
- A map is a representation of an area that shows where to go
Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is putting words in your understanding, usually in bullets.

When applying relative location your sentence should be similar to this:

Continent size order
- Asia - Africa - North America - South America - Antarctica - Europe - Australia
Continent population order
- Asia - Africa - Europe
- NA - SA - Australia - Antarctica

Arctic UP / Southern DOWN
Relative and Absolute
Absolute is EXACT, usually using coordinates, and relative is using basic directions
Continents and belts and zipper
The closer the “belt” the hotter, The closer to the “zipper” nothing happens
How does the purpose change your paraphrase?
When you are paraphrasing you should only write things that fit with your purpose.
