It was important for ancient civilizations to control the water because if there was flooding or a drought the crops would be destroyed. Their solution was to build dams, ditches, resevoirs, and canals. Because of this, there was a food surplus, so not everyone had to farm anymore leading to people having different jobs (job specialization).
