Background of Olympics: who created the Olympic games ?
Baron Pierre De Coubertin in 1896 after being influenced by ancient Greek games, the ethos and cult of athleticism of public schools and the Much Wenlock games created by Dr William Penny Brookes

world governing body created in 1894, own the rights to the symbol, responsible for selecting host cities

Paralympics
originated as a competition for veterans injured in war, more disabled groups added in 1976 and the first games held in 1980
Berlin, 1936
propaganda: Hitler promoted Aryan supremacy and refused to present Jesse Owens with a gold medal after they were won by numerous black athletes
Mexico City, 1968
protest: by Tommie Smith and John Carlos against apartheid in South Africa and USA by raising a fist in a black glove on the podium to promote black power, they were suspended from the games and expelled from the village
Munich, 1972
terrorism, 8 palestinian terrorists broke into the israeli athletes rooms killed 2 and held 9 hostage for 24hr, all hostages 5 terrorists and one officer killed during a shootout
Moscow, 1980
Boycott, lead by USA against soviet union who had invaded Afghanistan, more than 60 invited nations didn’t take part
LA, 1984
Boycott, by soviet union over fear of lack of security by the hosts, 16 (mainly communist) nations didn’t take part

high profile for sport, more funding for elite sport, sponsor for performers, positive role models, legacy of world class facilities
sporting disadvantages
underused facilities, short term participation increase, smaller sports likely to be sidelined, deviances hyped up by media e.g. doping
social advantages
showcasing of country, sense of pride, social intergration, volunteering opportunities, lower crime rates, increased pap and infrastructure
social disadvantages
locals may be displaced, increases local prices, benefits only felt by the minority, increased nationalism, terrorism/pollution threats
