Timeline of global economic shift to China
Extreme poverty in China has fallen form 60% in 1990 to 16% in 2005.
Became “Workshop of the world’ in 1990s as cities such as Shenzhen and Dongguan offered foreign investors a massive pool of low cost labour - Chinese worker suffering in factory conditions similar to victorian England.
Between 2000-2010, Chinese worker conditions improved significantly, urban disposable income tripled following a series of protests.
In 2010, workers walked off production lines for brands such as Honda, Carlsberg, and other global brands leading to an increase in wages between 30-60%.
Since 2010 China’s government has encouraged companies to move up the value chain. Economy is maturing rapidly so high tech manufacturing is booming- improved pay for skilled workers. High value products eg iphones are manufactured there.
GDP per capita multiplied by 25 from 1990 ($300us) to 2015 ($7500).

City with a population of over 10 million. Responisible for 75% of CO2 emissions.

Define deindustrialisation
Deindustrialisation is a country’s decline in manufacturing - the decline of regionally important manufacturing industries.

The rust belt is a region of the North East USA that has experienced industrial decline.
