What is state sovereignty, and how is a state sovereign?
A state’s ability to rule itself. states are sovereign when they have full control and authority over what happens within their borders
Explain the Difference between internal and external sovereignty
Internal sovereignty is when states have political authority within the states, borders, while external sovereignty refers to how states can influence global affairs
What is the Treaty of Westphalia and the 4 requirements of statehood?
The Treaty of Westphalia (1948) is the treaty that established the principles of statehood.

What is the ultimate recognition of a state being recognized of independent statehood?
Being recognized as a full member state of the United Nations
Is state sovereignty being eroded?
In global politics, it is argued that state sovereignty is being weakened by political, economic, and cultural globalization.
What are the factors that challenge state sovereignty?
International trade, multinational cooperation, and cultural networks are argued to challenge state sovereignty.
Realists’ and Liberalists’ views on states’ importance
Realists believe that states are the most important members of gp, while liberals believe states can still exist but cooperate on both economic and political matters.
What are the theories of sovereignty?
- Realists are prepared to both defend sovereignty as an absolute inviolable principle and to breach the sovereignty of other states if their own national interests require it
- Liberalists argue that sovereignty is an important but not exclusive principle in international political relations. Other states can be punished if they commit crimes within their boarders

How do states organize themselves
States manage their internal sovereignty in different ways, democracy is the most common model of a state government. State governments are elected by a fair process
What is interdependence
Interdependence is a key feature of a globalized world in which all groups in global politics is increasingly reliant on each other and influence each other
How are states economically and politically reliant on each other?
Economically: States are interlinked economically as they trade with each other and the success and failure of their economies are linked
Politically: States political decisions are likely to have an impact on other states

What are IGO’s?
Intergovernmental organizations refer to an entity created by a treaty, involving two or more nations, to work in good faith, on issues of common interest.
An Intergovernmental organization or IGO is an organization composed primarily of sovereign states, or of other intergovernmental organizations.
Why would powerful & less powerful states join IGOs?
Powerful states: To force or persuade other states to adopt policies or agreements that meet their national agreements
Less powerful states: Gives more influence than they would have if they acted alone
To resolve issues where acting alone is insufficient
Examples??
Why do states use IGOs?
To increase or increase their military power or economic power.
Regional igos have more united power and influence on the world stage than states in the region that act alone, such as the African Union, Association of the South East, and Asian Nations (ASEAN).

UN is the leading international organization that is truly international in nature, the four objectives are
1) Promoting and protecting human rights
2) Protecting and promoting global peace and security

A Hybrid Inter-Governmental Organization (IGO) combines aspects of both governmental and non-governmental entities in its structure and activities. It typically involves collaboration between states and non-state actors to address complex global issues.
EU: A complex IGO that has a wide range of responsibilities and supporting institutions, with supranational power
AU: Made up of every national African nation-state, except Morroco, mainly deals with security and political and economic development
