what is functionalism?
emphasizes the bottom-up cooperation on non political technical and narrow issues
what is neofunctionalism?
emphasizes on a top-down approach where cooperation is achieved by creating IGO’s for difficult issues– people learn to trust and govern through those through spillover
what is neoliberal institutionalism
A formal intergovernmental organizations (IGO) as well as the less formal normative frameworks of international institutions such as multilateralism, make cooperation easier to achieve
what are the reasons for the growth in IGOs?
-increased international contact requiring routinised technical structure
-increased interdependence
-expansion of transnational problems that require collective solutions
-failure of state-centric security to avert war or the use of particular tactics within war
-efforts of small states to gain strength through collective action on issues such as economic development
