Global Management Strategies Flashcards
Wetland restoration
Occupies 6% of Earth’s land surface but stores 35% of terrestrial carbon
Canada’s prairie provinces lost 70% of wetlands
International convention on Wetlands- up to 500 ha of grade 1 farmland in E. Cambridgeshire being converted to wetland
Afforestation
Reduces atmospheric carbon because trees are carbon sinks
China aims to afforest 400 000 km2 (size of Spain) by 2050. Also helps to prevent desertification and land degredation.
Achieved 30 000 km2 in 2000-2009
Agricultural practices examples and solution
Overcultivisation results in soil erosion and the release of carbon.
Intensive livestock farming produces 100 million tonnes/yr of CH4
Manure management can reduce CH4 emissions by storing manure in anaerobic containers
International agreements. Examples? Why did some opt out?
Some of the World’s largest greenhouse emitters opted out of these agreements
Kyoto agreement put ACs in legally binding commitments to reduce emissions which EDCs were exempt despite being some of the largest emitters
