Agenda 21
A global blueprint for sustainable development set out at the Rio Earth summit in 1992. The plans are meant to be adopted within all levels of governance to encourage more sustainable behaviour, e.g. UK’s varied recycling options were influenced by this
Environmental sustainability
When the current demands can be met without reducing future environmental quality
Global commons
Areas and resource domains that are beyond any national border. These are supra-national spaces e.g. Antarctica, High Seas, Atmosphere, Space
Global governance
When political integration is aimed at solving global issues by coordinating international responses. This is especially important in the increasingly economically interdependent world
MDGs
Millenium development goals. Time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty. There were 8 goals set by the UN in 2000 to be met by 2015 compared to 1990 levels. There has been success in HIV/AIDS in many areas including SS Africa
SDGs
Sustainable development goals. To replace the now expired MDGs. There are 17 goals across social, economic and environmental issues
UN
United Nations. Founded in 1945 and made up of 193 members states. Aims to promote peace and cooperation
WSSD
World summit on sustainable development (Johannesburg, 2002). Aimed to focus attention on conserving natural resources while meeting increasing demands for food, water, shelter, energy, healthcare…
