The Global Geoparks Network (GGN) (also known as the Global Network of National Geoparks) is a UNESCO assisted network established in 1998.
Seeks the promotion and conservation of the planet’s geological heritage, as well as encourages the sustainable research and development by the concerned communities.

India has sent 3 names to get the status,
1 Lonar lake(MH)
2 Malpe Beach(Kar)
3 St Marry Island(Kar)
What is a global geopark
It is an landscape that has geological significance. It will be designated by UNESCO’s GGN by following bottom up approch to bring sustainable development using local community.
What are the prerequiste for the status
1 Site should have a own website
2 should be treated as corporate entity
3 Finance and comprehensive mng plan
Can status be taken back?
Yes
1 It will be awarded for 4yrs
2 It has to be renewed after that
3 If the quality is comprasied it will get 2ys time yellow
card
4 still no quality it will get red card thrown out
5 If maintained well green card and continued
What is diffrence b/w geo park,bio sphere reserve,world heritage site?
Bio sphere reserve=Harmonised mng of biological and cultural diversity.
WHS=natural or cultural site with international importance.
GP=Site of geological significance.
how are our sites geological important
Lonar lake=Formed by metorite crash on basltic rock
Mary isalnd=Formed by seperating from madagascar
