Global Distribution Flashcards
What is a hazard ?
A hazard is a potential threat to human life and property
Types of natural hazard
Hydro-meteorological (Climate processes) and Geophysical (Caused by land processes)
Where do geophysical hazards occur and what could they be ?
- Near plate Boundaries
- Earthquakes and volcanic activity
Name for earthquakes that occur near middle of middle of plates?
Intra-plate
How do intra plate earthquakes occur?
May occur if solid crust, which has weakened over time cracks under pressure
What is a volcanic hotspot and give example
A localised area of the lithosphere which has unusually high temperatures due to upwelling of hot molten material from core
Exp: Ring Of Fire and Hawaii
What is a plume ?
Hot rock due to magma rising
Oceanic Fracture Zone (OFZ
This is a belt of activity through the oceans and along the
mid-ocean ridges through Africa, the Red Sea, the Dead Sea
Continental Fracture Zone (CFZ)
This is a belt of activity along the mountain ranges from
Spain through the Alps to the Middle East and to the Himalayas.
How are hazards impacting people and economic costs
- The total number of people being affected by tectonic hazards is increasing, due to
population growth. - Increases in development as infrastructure in more developed
countries costs more to repair - Insurance policies
Factors affecting fatalities
- Location
- Education
- Accessibility for aid
Direct and Indirect deaths
Direct = Those killed in the disaster straight away
Indirect - By looking at for example people who died of a disease that spread after disaster
