global climates Flashcards
what is a climate
a climate is the average temperature over the course of years
each climate has its own characteristics eg
eg there average temperature, sunshine, levels of percipitation
what does latitude mean
measures the distance from the equator
what are the three types of climates
-hot
temperate
cold
what are the 3 hot climates
equatorial, savanna, and hot desert
what are the 2 temperate climates
warm temperate oceanic (meditteranean), cool temperate oceanic
what are the 2 cold climates
boreal, tundra
where can you find an
equatorial
savanna
hot desrt
north brazil
nigeria
15-30 degrees north/south of the equator

what is irelands climate
cool temperate oceanic
what four factors affect irelands climate
1.distance from seas and oceans
2.latitude
3.prevailing winds
4.altitude&aspect
what is the main influence on irelands climate
atlantic ocean and the north atlantic current/drift
what is the north atlantic current
a gulf stream that flows from mexico to NW europe, the water at the gulf of mexico is heated by warm water from the equator as it travels NW europe
what happens to the sea in summer and winter
the sea heats up in summer and cools down in winter-irish coastal areas dont get hot in summer nor cold in winter
what do sun rays do
the suns rays are parallel, they carry equal amounts of heat before reaching earth, they concentrate on small areas and give off great heat, the atmosphere absorbs the heat from the suns rays, places far from the eqautor dont get as much heat
what are prevailling winds
winds that blow most regularly over an area, they are namedafter whivh direction they blow in eg:south-westerly winds.
what does altitude mean
height above sea level
decrease in temperature is called
lapse rate
what is irelands landscape
flatland
increased altitude means increased
rainfall
