Congress
The group of people who are responsible for making the laws of a country in some kinds of government
Executive Branch
The part of the government that has its authority and responsibility for the daily administration of the state
Legislative Branch
Confirms or rejects presidential appointments, and has the authority to declare war
Judicial Branch
Interprets the meaning of laws, applies laws to individual cases, and decides if laws violate the Constitution
President
Someone who has the highest position in an organization or business
Vice-President
A person whose rank is just below that of the president of a country, business, etc.
Census
The official process of counting the number of people in a country, city, or town and collecting information about them
Supreme Court
The highest court of law in a country or U.S. state
House of Representatives
Pass federal legislation that affects the entire country, although its bills must also be passed by the Senate and further agreed to by the U.S. President before becoming law
Senate
The smaller group of the two groups of people who meet to discuss and make the laws of a country, state, etc.
Liberalism
Belief in the value of social and political change in order to achieve progress
Conservatism
Belief in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society
Checks and Balances
Each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others
Democracy
A form of government in which people choose leaders by voting
Politics
The opinions that someone has about what should be done by governments
