The Brundtland Commission

A

Gro Harlem Brundtland, a Norwegian politician and physician, served as Prime Minister of Norway in 1981. Having served previously as Minister for the Environment, she was asked, in 1983, by the United Nations Secretary General to chair the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED). This WCED is commonly referred to, in her honour, as the Brundtland Commission. With work on the commission beginning in 1983, delegates from developed and developing nations came together over three years to discuss issues related to conserving the environment and dealing with other issues which were critical to society at large.
