Glaucoma Flashcards
By 2020, estimated ? million people will have glaucoma worldwide (Quigley et al).
80
According to the Blue Mountains Eye Study (BMES) what is the prevalence of undiagnosed OAG?
3-51%
The Rotterdam Eye Study found that a FHx of glaucoma increases lifetime risk of development by ? times.
10
Aqueous production is facilitated due which two processes?
Ultrafiltration and active secretion
According to Burr et al (2007) what the prevalence of OAG at 40yo and 70yo?
0.3% and 3.3%
What is the strongest predictor for the development of POAG from OHT?
Thin CCT
How often should gonioscopy be performed in patients with POAG?
Routinely every 1-2 years or if there is unexplained elevation in IOP.
Mean deviation (MD) for moderate POAG?
Between -6.00 and -12.00dB
What the common causes of neovascular glaucoma?
CRVO (33%), DR (33%), OIS, RD, tumour, chronic inflammation
What is the pathogenesis of pigmentary glaucoma?
Posterior bowing of the iris induces rubbing of the pigment epithelium and the lens which leads to release of pigment deposits into the angle thereby blocking the TM causing increased IOP.
What percentage of PXF convert to PXG in 10 years?
30%!
What is the mechanism of action of PGAs?
Improves outflow of aqueous through the non-conventional uveoscleral pathway by acting on prostaglandin F receptors in the ciliary muscle
leading to an increase in matrix metalloproteinases which degrades collagen and reduces hydraulic
resistance around the muscles fibres.
Advantages and disadvantages of a Goldmann gonio lens?
Gold standard; needs coupling fluid, subsequent blurred vision and harder to perform indentation
What is the pathophysiology of pupillary block?
Apposition of the iris and anterior lens surface increases the pressure gradient between the anterior and posterior chamber which pushes the iris forward and narrows the anterior chamber angle. This may result in ITC and/or synechia.
One of the adverse effects of laser iridoplasty?
Urrets-Zavalia syndrome
